Chapel of the Transfiguration 2025.05.27

We visited Grand Teton National Park today with the intention of driving through to Yellowstone. But I remembered a couple of features I’d wanted to see and that delayed our plans. One of those places was the Chapel of the Transfiguration.

The Chapel of the Transfiguration is a small log chapel in Grand Teton National Park, in the community of Moose. The chapel was sited and built to frame a view of the Cathedral Group of peaks in a large window behind the altar. The chapel, which was built in 1925, is owned and operated by St. John’s Episcopal Church in Jackson (Wikipedia).

We wound up spending most of our day there enjoying the view of the mountains and a quiet, peaceful afternoon nap accompanied initially by light rain. We decided to stay through sunset hoping to catch another spectacle. It wound up being cloudier than I’d anticipated but we caught some dazzling color.

At one point, I spotted a small insect in Luna’s water bowl. At first it appeared to just be debris. There was debris in her water as there tends to be intermittently; pollen, leaves, etc. But there was definitely something that looked like it might’ve had legs. I hoped it was still alive and gently fished it out with a fat, clumsy finger tip.

He wound up being alive, which meant I got to send a report to my sister, Joanna, whom I frequently report to when I get to rescue one of creation’s littlest living members. I let him dry off on the safe footing of my hand a while, watching him wipe his legs and wings, before placing him on what I thought seemed like a hearty plant leaf that would make a safe refuge for the remainder of his recovery.

We decided to head back to Jackson for another night. We might make another go of it tomorrow—heading to Yellowstone I mean. But I’ll decide that later. I don’t like feeling like I’m rushing myself. And I have no qualms being where we have been as long as the weather stays within my preferred window of temperature and humidity.
